We had a slow and quiet start to the day, and I was really hoping my recent nightmares would prove just that - bad dreams, and not glimpses of future events.

Hope is for fools.

It rained some last night, which turned out to be a mixed blessing. While some areas were flooded, making passage damn near impossible for any creature living or dead, the softened ground gave up its grisly cargo with too much ease right about noon. For those fortunate enough to live high up in rain-washed areas, they had a little extra time to brace themselves.

I pity those who lived near gullies or at the bottom of steep muddy hills.

As for us, we're in a second-floor corner apartment, with good visibility and hard-to-breach windows. The front door was a little iffy, but thanks to some sturdy furniture we've got that barricaded now. Just hoping the little furballs don't get too close to the cracks or the door itself - I think the zombies can smell life, and I'd hate to see one of our furbabies get taken.

We tried smearing some rancid hamburger around the door and windows, in the hopes it would mask our scent, but the cats went nuts and started chewing on the sills. We've cleaned that up and sprayed vinegar around instead. I can't say it's an improvement, our apartment smells really special right now, but so far, there haven't been any shuffling footsteps outside, so I guess that's a good thing.

Then again, that could be in part due to one diligent and zealous neighbor taking a fireman's axe to the stairwell and basically separating our apartment from the rest of the building.

In any case, we're holed up for the long haul here. As long as the electric stays on, we'll be researching methods for zombie eradication that don't involve a lot of fire - too many lives at stake here for that. If things go pearshaped, we're tossing the cats out the back window and following them; I'd hate to fight zombies in a cornfield, but I refuse to stay here like a rat in a trap.

In the event we have to evacuate, I'll take my phone and try to update via my Twitter.

Something about that date...

June 13, June 13...why do I get a Bad Feeling about that date, like the dead are just waiting to rise and eat our brains?
